Interested in joining the NZ Bone Marrow Donor Registry?
The decision to join the NZ Bone Marrow Donor Registry requires careful consideration and commitment. By joining, you are volunteering to donate your bone marrow to anyone, anywhere in the world, if you are found to be a suitable match.
Eligibility criteria: We are currently recruiting the following people to the NZ Bone Marrow Donor Registry:
- Males with Maori or Pacific Island ancestry (or)
- Males with an ancestor from any NZ ethnic minority group (and)
- Aged between 18 and 40 years old and in good health at the time of registration (and)
- Able to meet the NZ Blood Service requirements to donate blood (Read the NZBS blood donor eligibility criteria here) (and)
- Willing to donate bone marrow to any patient anywhere in the world
How do I join the NZ Bone Marrow Donor Registry?
If you meet the above criteria, you can join the NZ Registry by donating a unit of blood (470mls) at a NZ Blood Service (NZBS) Donor Centre or Mobile. Simply ask about joining the NZ Bone Marrow Donor Registry when you register for your blood donation.
A Mobile is when a team of staff from NZBS visit towns and set up equipment in a suitable room to collect blood from donors on site.
Where can I join?
What will happen when I join?
Before your blood donation you will also be asked to sign a bone marrow consent form allowing an extra tube of blood to be taken for tissue-typing tests. Your tissue type record will be entered into a national database and compared with patients needing bone marrow transplants. If you match a patient, you will be contacted to confirm that you are still healthy and agree to have another blood sample taken to confirm the potential match.
There is no NZBS Donor Centre or Mobile near me, how do I join?
Unfortunately you must donate 470mls of blood with the NZ Blood Service to join the NZ Bone Marrow Donor Registry. Please contact us if you'd like some help a finding donation site near you.
You may be able to join the NZ Bone Marrow Donor Registry online today, if you've previously been tissue-typed in the past!
Complete the Online Consent Form if you are currently aged between 18 - 59 years of age and have been tissue-typed in the past either...
- when you became a platelet donor or
- in the search for a donor for a family member or
- if you joined an overseas Bone Marrow Registry but are now living in NZ
It's possible you may have previously been tissue-typed but not be on the NZ Bone Marrow Donor Registry. With your permission, we're able to transfer your tissue-type record to the NZ Bone Marrow Registry if you complete the consent form. Because you've already been tissue-typed, no further blood samples are required and the eligibility criteria to join is extended for people up to 59 years of age.
If you are unsure whether you’re already on the NZ Bone Marrow Donor Registry, please contact us.
